The UW-L Waterski and Wakeboard team competed in the Midwest Collegiate Water Ski Association (MCWSA) Regional Tournament this past weekend in Decatur, Illinois this past weekend, culminating what has been a successful fall season. The team, which competes in 3 water ski events (slalom, trick, and jump) as well as wakeboard trick competitions, placed in the top ten at all three tournaments that preceded the regional tournament. The team started off the season with an eighth place finish at the Hawkeye Skifest, hosted by Iowa University, followed by a seventh place tournament at the Iowa State SkiWars. The team then took ninth out of 22 overall at the Great Plains Conference Championship, earning the final spot to go to regionals out of the nation's toughest division. The tournaments, which are governed by USA Waterski, feature collegiate teams from across Wisconsin, as well as Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Colorado, Minnesota, Michigan, and Missouri. At the regional tournament, the wakeboard team placed third overall. Freshman Cobi Krumholz took first place in the men's wakeskate division, while junior Katie White took home Best Overall Female honors. Said team vice president Jeff Cadry, "We're a competitive team open to all students who still like to have fun. Our goals are to qualify as far as we can. Nationals is always a good goal." With the wakeboard team's third place finish, they qualified for the national competition, which will take place in San Diego at the end of April. "Making regionals is the biggest highlight, and we're excited to see how we fare at nationals," added Cadry. The team features only three returning members, and is younger than they have been in recent years and are always looking for new members.
