After closing down Murphy this past week, my Pandora has been working overtime to keep me awake and relaxed. In being an enormous fan of Joshua Radin right now, it was only due that I create a Pandora music station based upon Radin. Doing so provided me with this week's new artist: Josh Auer. Yeah - another Josh, go figure. Josh Auer's music is a blend of artistic pop, bass guitar and mellow lyrics and holds flavor for the listener of any music-genre. Josh started his musical career early on as a teen touring with the band PAX217. After five years of touring the world Josh settled in to songwriting at the age of 22. He quickly gained notice in the writing community with his popular success of The Romantics tune "What I Like About You" which has been notably featured in "Freaky Friday", "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" and "13 Going on 30" among others. January marked his solo debut as a performing artist with his release of Dear You. Short and sweet is what I would term this album, as it is comprised of just five songs. However, each track is packed with lengths of emotion and artist-passion; besides it makes for an economic buy on iTunes for just $3.99. Track One: "White Flag" - Toe-tapping good with lyrics that speak of maturity: "Hey it isn't ok/ To raise the white flag this round/And hey we're all to blame/ We're held slave to our choices/ ignoring the voices/ Yeah we've got much to learn" Track Two: "Dear You" - The title track, this is my personal favorite and is the song on Pandora that led me to research Auer. Josh's tone is inspiring and combined with some of the best piano and guitar I have heard in quite some time. It is no wonder this rift has been featured on One Tree Hill, Brothers and Sisters and Samantha Who. Track Three: "Sure Things" - Is the most upbeat track of the five. The instrumentation is wicked cool, going beyond the piano and guitar. However, it remains for me personally not a track to listen to on repeat, as it can be a little too sing-song/rock your head with a smile like you're high. Track Four: "It's Up to You" - The oddball on the album, I use this track not to relax, but to escape. This song is perfect for exercising with running found directly in the lyrics: "Run away/ Run away if you need to/ Run away/ It's up to you." Written from the stance of the heartbroken realizing that mending will not be possible; it's definitely a mature break-up anthem that has clever and deep lyrics. Track Five: "Low" - From start to finish this album pleases. In this track the lyrics go from heavy (almost depressing) to lofty sincerity -which are accentuated by Josh's tone, repetition, and eerie guitar strumming. Lyrical stanza like: "Floating in the ocean/ Drifting far away/ I'm low low/ Tell me there is sunshine/ Dancing with the rain/ I'm low low" is just one of the many reasons why I believe you should check out Josh Auer, and Joshua Radin too if you like Auer. 4 of 5 stars.
