After listening to songs from Jessica Sonner's album, "All We Need," it is easy to see why the singer has hit it big in not only her home state of Colorado, but across the Midwest. Her rich, sultry voice is often accompanied solely by her guitar, and her songs are easily relatable. Sonner, who grew up in Lakewood, Colorado, a city not far from Denver, earned a degree in music business from Anderson University in Indiana, where she learned music writing and first picked up a guitar. After graduating she worked as a model and moved to Chicago. In the Windy City Sonner laid down her first tracks for her self-titled EP, released in 2005. Sonner traveled across the country after the release in a truck and camper, playing hundreds of shows and selling over 10,000 copies of her EP by herself. Sonner confides, "I love playing colleges. I love college kids. It's such an awesome time in life to grow and work on figuring out who you are and deciding the kind of person you're gonna be. I really love being a part of that somehow by writing music that so many people can relate to." She has been compared to the likes of Norah Jones, Joss Stone, and Colbie Caillat, all of whom are considered accomplished singer-songwriters with soothing and rich voices. Caillat and Sonner often perform together as Sonner opens often for Caillat, and she certainly leaves the stage with big shoes to fill. Sonner's stage presence is said to be impressive, winning over crowds with her earnest lyrics and soothing voice. She also has opened for Third Eye Blind, Tristan Prettyman and Sara Bareilles. "All We Need," Sonner's first full-length album, was released in April of 2008. She's certainly not afraid of playing around with genres, as the album features songs that range from the acoustic warmth of "Just You," to a soulful "Took Your Love," and to the country-rock feel of "Forget You," which appeared on the hit HBO show Big Love. Sonner is an up-and-comer to watch for. Her talent and stage presence will launch her into the national spotlight. Sonner is set to perform at the CAB Thursday event on Nov. 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m., with microphone and guitar on hand. As usual, Cellar Thursdays are free, so there's no excuse to miss this promising performance.
