UW-L Students and community members gather to "Thrill the World" in an event to break the world record for largest simultaneous Thriller dance.
Groups around the world dance to raise money for charity and pay tribute to the late Michael Jackson. La Crosse participants will gather at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 in Copeland Park (the Logger's Stadium) of La Crosse.
"This isn't just a small dance to perform the week before Halloween," says Heather Suby, La Crosse area event organizer, "but an attempt to make history and be in the Guinness Book of World Records as well as raise funds for a charity of choice." Thrill the World of La Crosse will donate all monetary funds to Wisconsin Badger Camp, an organization to benefit people with developmental disabilities. Collected food donations will support local food pantries.
The event started as a "cool idea" three years ago, and is now an international hit in five continents. Ines Markelle, a dance choreographer and instructor in Toronto, Canada, founded "Thrill the World" with 62 dancers in 2006. Last year, the event grew to 4,179 participants in 10 countries. There are already 372 registered events in countries from Malaysia to Mexico.
There will be a dance workshop the day of the event for participants who do not know the dance from 12-4 p.m. in Copeland Park. All dancers will rehearse 4:30-6:30 p.m. before the performance. Spectators are asked to donate $3 upon entrance to benefit charity.
Anyone interested in participating in Thrill the World of La Crosse must register online at www.thrilllax09.blogspot.com. Registering is free, but all participants are asked to donate a non-perishable food item to support to local food pantries.
