Since 1989, the UW-L Eagle has been the athletic and all around mascot for the university but up until now, as Director of UW-L Intercollegiate Athletics Joe Baker, explains "right now our mascot's first name is 'The'." In following the collegiate tradition of personifying the university mascot, like Madison's Bucky Badger and Minnesota's Goldie Gopher, the UW-L Athletics department is giving students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to name the beloved UW-L Eagle mascot. Through a series of online nominations and voting, the three stage process, which began on Friday, October 17, will culminate with the announcement of the Eagle's name at the UW-L versus Viterbo University Alumni Cup Women's and Men's Basketball Games on November 25 at UW-L's Mitchell Hall. From October 17 through October 24, any current UW-L student has the opportunity to submit an online ballot to nominate a name for the eagle mascot. Students will need their university e-mail (8.4) and password to make a nomination, much like the nomination process to name Murphy's Mug in 2007. From there, a committee composed of Athletics Department staff, students, Alumni Association members, and others will narrow the list down to the top ten most nominated names, and will eliminate any names that are deemed offensive or inappropriate from the list. From October 28 through November 7 students, faculty, and staff will have the chance to vote for their favorite of the top ten names. And then from November 11 through November 21 the top three names will be available to vote in the same online process. Also to be announced at the Alumni Cup basketball game will be the winner of a life-time general admission all-sports pass, allowing the recipient to attend all regular season UW-L home sporting events. One person will be selected from the pool of people who voted for the Eagle's winning name to receive the life-time sports pass, and $100 to be donated on their behalf to a sports team of their choice. Originally suggested by the UW-L Cheer and Stunt team's advisor, the "name-the-eagle contest" is part of Baker's overall goal to further increase student participation. "I know it's already started to sparked conversation with people because as the word started to slip out I've heard students on campus talking about it. Hopefully people will have some fun with it.
