Watch the news lately and you might notice that the stories all have something in common…they're bad. That is not to say that they're poorly reported or not important to know about, but rather that, overall, the content of the stories is rather disheartening. The failing auto industry, the war on terror, rising unemployment numbers, falling stock prices, there is not a lot to smile about in the news anymore. But that doesn't mean that nothing worth smiling about has happened. If you're looking for something a little more upbeat in the news cycle, here are four headlines that you may have missed, but are well worth a little attention, (and a smile!)
Singer Susan Boyle Stuns Simon Cowell If you haven't seen or heard Susan Boyle get to Youtube…now! The 47 year old Scottish singing sensation appeared on "Britain's Got Talent" earlier this month. Sporting frizzy salt and peppered hair and a less then flattering floral dress, stocking, orthopedic shoe ensemble, there wasn't a member of the judging panel (or audience) that hadn't written Boyle off before she started to sing. But when the music started and Boyle opened her mouth an amazing discovery was made. She was good! An astonishing example of why one should never judge a book by its cover, Susan Boyle has quickly emerged as an internet sensation and a favorite in the competition. A feel good story for all ages, Susan Boyle's story is definitely worth a listen.
Afghanistan Designates First National Park You may have heard mention of Afghanistan in the news the past few weeks, most likely associated with the War on Terror, Osama bin Laden, or increased American Military presence. What you most likely didn't hear about was the peaceful movement of the Afghani people to protect their environment. The most significant effort was in the designation of their first national park, an area of pristine lakes, tributaries and natural dams. Afghanistan's National Environmental Protection Agency hopes that by declaring the area a park they may solicit more funding to protect the fragile environment as well as attract international tourists.
New York City Taxis to Go Green New York City announced early a plan earlier this month to transition to "green" taxis. The cabs will still sport their traditional yellow paint jobs, but will be more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly. For those who have been to the Big Apple, you know that the volume of cars on the road has Co2 emissions nightmare written all over it. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission Board of Commissioners hope that transitioning part of the taxi fleet over to hybrid vehicles will help in protecting the air and the environment.
YouTube Orchestra Dazzles at Carnegie Hall If there was any doubt that music is a universal language let it be erased. Early this month an orchestra composed of musicians from all over the world came together to play a spectacular sold out concert in one of the hallowed concert venues in the world, Carnegie Hall. What brought the musicians together? YouTube! The "YouTube Symphony" was the first group ever to hold auditions through uploaded video applications. Over 3000 musicians uploaded videos, resulting in a 96 member "super-group" representing 33 countries and whose members ranged in age from 15 to 55. The performance included classical pieces from Bach and Mozart as well as a new orchestration, "Internet Symphony No. 1," composed especially for the occasion.
