The Career Services office on campus is designed to help students at any stage of the job or professional school search. One of the primary services that is offered is career advising. There are five advisors on staff more than willing to help students plan for their future. Each advisor sees students from a particular college of study on campus, meaning that students get an advisor that specializes in their field of study and knows that field's particular job market very well.
Events are held by the office that are held to provide students with contact with employers, giving them the opportunity to network and learn skills needed for the work world. Two events are coming up in October: Prep for Success on October 11 at 6:30 p.m. and the Career Expo on October 12 from 10a.m. – 3p.m. Prep for Success gives students the chance to ask a panel of employers questions about finding jobs after college and what employers are looking for. There are four employers on the panel that will be answering questions about career expo etiquette and social media. The Career Expo gives students the chance to network with employers and gain interviews for job openings at the businesses that are present at the expo.
Jess Hacker, the office grad assistant, says "The Career Services Office is a valuable resource that aids students in refining and selling the skill sets they've acquired during their time at UW-L. Through this process, students are taught how to best market and prepare themselves for a career that reflects their values, interests and abilities."
Advisors meet with students to help with resumes, cover letters, interview tips, job search strategies, personal statements, and networking. Students also have the option to schedule mock interviews with the advisors or, office grads or interns, to prepare for future interviews.
Other resources the office provides are access to EagleOpportunities, which has a list of advisor-approved job opening listings as well as Perfect Interview that is a website that allows you to practice answering interview questions and to watch your responses. The office's website, www.uwlax.edu/careerserviceshas links to resume, cover letter, professional dress and interview tips. Information about job opportunities for different majors can be found there as well as internship information.
