Among the most prominent issues debated on the floor of the Student Senate meeting was the topic of possibly tearing down the Cartwright Center in favor of a new student union.

Around campus, students have much to say regarding this. For example, some see the action of demolishing Cartwright as an excuse for the school to spend extra money. However, "They're not looking for ways to spend money," said Madisson Heinze, student body president.

This past spring, a Cartwright Review Committee was formed in order to analyze the current state of the structural integrity and functionality of Cartwright. Having been built in the early 1960s, the building is in poor shape. Larry Ringgenberg, the director of University Centers, has done his best to raise and save up money to account for the repairs being made to Cartwright.

However, in the last decade the repairs have become so expensive that it was time to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of building a new facility versus continuing repairs on the building.

Many students have had different perspectives on the rebuilding, including questions about why the money being spent on the new project isn't going toward making repairs to the Clocktower.  However, said Heinze, this potential project "… has been discussed for quite some time among the student and school administrative body. Building a new student union has been an idea that has been on the table for a long time, not something that we decided we were just going to do one day."
