Saturday afternoon the Eagles defeated conference rival UW-Eau Claire 68-51. The Eagles improve their season record to 4-2 while the Blugolds fall to 5-2. La Crosse is now 2-0 in conference standings after the win in Mitchell Hall.
The first five minutes of the game were rough. Both teams exchanged turnovers play after play. After missing their first four shots, the Eagles flipped a switch. They led the Blugolds 7-6 after five minutes thanks to a 3-pointer by sophomore Mackenzie Hunter, an all WIAC forward last year. From there the Eagles tried to separate from Eau Claire. They went up 13-8, 15-10, and then 19-12, mostly due to Blugold fouls. By the end of the game, the Eagles had a total of 22 points from the free throw line, with a total of 28 tries.
The Blugolds would not give up, however. They went on an 8-0 run to take the lead 20-19 for only the second time in the game.
After a timeout, La Crosse got back in the game and took the lead 23-20. Eau Claire started falling apart towards the end of the half again, overthrowing passes like they had earlier. The Eagles went up 28-26, only to leave forward Mackenzie Hunter to hit another triple to increase the score to 31-26. The half ended with the score 33-28. The Eagles were 40% on their shots at half, and looking determined to step up their play in the second half.
Hunter quickly hit a field goal to start the second half. The Eagles pushed their lead from seven to ten as they went up 40-30 on the Blugolds. Then, the Eagles took their game to the next level, mostly to the part of guard Ashley Wagner. Wagner rattled off 8 points in five minutes, making Eau Claire defenders look foolish in the process. This gave the Eagles 54-42 lead.
Though the Blugolds were trying to come back, La Crosse shut them down. Hunter nailed in two free throws to make the game 56-46. Then once again, Wagner hit an improbable turn-around, fade away jump shot that left both La Crosse and Eau Claire fans in awe. The only thing missing from the shot was a 'she's on fire' cry from the announcer.
