As the summer approaches, most college students are frantically searching for a job. Some may have already found the same old summer job back home life-guarding, landscaping or painting. If you are not one of these students, and are looking for an internship but don't know where to go, keep reading.
When choosing an internship you must identify the qualities you are looking to gain from the job. Are you looking for leadership skills? Are you looking to build your resume? Are you looking to become independent? Are you looking to make a lot of money?
If you are a business major, one of the more popular internships is with Trane heating and air from American Standard Company. This internship is for sophomore and junior standing, full-time students with a major or minor in business, finance, economics, or accounting. They pay ten dollars per hour and require that you work twenty four hours per week until school is out and then forty hours per week during the summer. There are many different positions available and this internship is in La Crosse. For more information on how to apply, you may contact the Business adviser from UW-L Career Services, Karla Stanek, at stanek.karl@uwlax.edu.
The Southwestern Company has a great opportunity for college students to run their own business for the summer. Southwestern is a publishing company that has college students from all over the world travel to a different state and sell their products to families.
Last year, the students from UWL went to Los Angeles, California. The average first year student makes $8,111. Only about twenty students are chosen from each campus, and they are looking for highly motivated individuals who are reliable and have at least a 3.0 GPA. This internship is for students of all years in college and for all majors.
Tim Schmitt is a senior at UWL and has been with Southwestern for three summers, going on his fourth.
"The Southwestern Company has taught me everything I need to know to be successful after college. Their training program is second to none and it has given me the confidence to know I will be successful in anything I choose to do. Thanks to Southwestern, I will also be able to graduate debt- free," said Schmitt.
If you are interested in applying for the Southwestern internship you may contact Tim Schmitt at schmitt.timo@students.uwlax.edu or Jamie Wianecki at wianecki.jami@students.uwlax.edu.
If you are looking for a different opportunity, a great website to check out is www.uwlax.edu/careerservices. From there you can log into Eagle Opportunities, which is a site that has a list of possible internships for all different majors. The cost is $20 for your whole college career plus the next two years after graduation. Meetings are also available with an advisor from Career Services at Wilder Hall.
