There have been some problems leading up to and entering the 2007-'08 NFL season. Looking at some of the early controversies, including the Michael Vick trial, the Patriots' cheating scandal, and a career ending injury to Kevin Everett, it would seem that fans would have to look very hard to find any bright spots this season. However, there is still some hope left, at least for Everett.
Entering just his third season in the NFL, 25-year-old Kevin Everett suffered a spinal cord injury in the Bills' season opener against the Broncos. Everett arrived at the hospital paralyzed from the neck down. This being the case, the doctors initially thought that Everett would not be able to walk ever again.
The situation obviously had an effect on not only Bills' players, but on fans and players from all over the league. Bills' players had to resume their normal weekly practices and preparations for their next game, but Everett was clearly on their minds when they played the Steelers in week two. In honor of Everett, the players made t-shirts with Everett's name and number on the back. They wore these under their jerseys during their loss to the Steelers. Everett's injury was not going to be forgotten quickly, and this was obvious as the Bills struggled to play good football for the first three weeks.
Even with an 0-3 start to the season, there was still a reason for the Bills to keep their heads up. The news for Kevin Everett kept on getting better through each week. Just a few days after the injury, Everett was able to move his arms and legs. This seemed like a small improvement, but it turned into great news for Everett. In just a few days, an injury that looked like it would forever paralyze him, had now given the doctors the impression that Everett would be able to walk, possibly within weeks.
Back in his hometown in Houston, Everett is able to spend time with some close family members and friends who are thrilled to see him in much better shape. He still receives cards and letters of encouragement from fans and players, wishing him a speedy recovery. Although Everett's NFL career is most likely over, he still has reasons to be thankful. It looks as if he will still have two working legs and two working arms.
There has been a lot of focus on the controversial stories surrounding the NFL. However, with the bad, there can still be some good mixed in. No one likes to see a player get injured, but it still feels good to see situations like Everett's end much better than anyone would have thought. Stories like his should not be forgotten.
