The UW-L women's soccer team improved to 2-2 within the conference and 5-3 overall with a 2-0 win over UW-Stout on Saturday.
With a damp field and a slight breeze giving the spectators a little chill, the first half was controlled well by the Eagles.
There were a lot of early chances for UW-L such as junior Michaela Kocon's long hard shot over the crossbar on a free kick with 25 minutes to go in the first half.
The momentum seemed to be shifting though as the Blue Devils finally broke through the defensive line a couple of times, but the game remained scoreless.
They had another golden opportunity when junior Ramsey Weyenberg hit one off the top crossbar with 13 minutes left. Not too much later the goalie came out to knock the ball away, but senior Amy Cory's long cross connected with Weyenberg not long after with 8:28 left in the half.
"We look for seams," said Cory. "I took it back and got the cross off."
The second half was certainly highlighted by goalkeeper Amanda Clark who made a variety of excellent saves, including a save on a cross header with 36 minutes left. The best scoring chance for Stout came with 32 minutes left when it was a 1-on-1 with Clark who forced the Stout player into a tough shot which went off the top far corner of the goalpost.
"We have some breakdowns every once in a while, but we always refocus well," said Clark.
Clark also punched away a corner kick with 28 minutes left and had stifled other Stout scoring chances.
It seemed as though UW-L might not hold onto their one goal lead late in the game with Stout's chances becoming more and more frequent and the forwards especially looking tired, but head coach Sara Burton made three late timely substitutions with around 7 minutes left in the game.
Those three substitutions reinvigorated the offensive attack, which led to a late goal by junior Amiee Schneider at 2:16 to put the game away.
"We connected well today on everything," said Cory. "We're just going to keep playing our game."
Still it was the defensive pressure, especially in the first half which prevented Stout from getting a lot of chances.
"It was the first time in a long time," said Clark of the excellent first half defense. "I'd love for that to happen every game."
The Eagles will next play at UW-Platteville on Wednesday before getting a home game against UW-Whitewater at 2pm on Saturday.
"Our defense has been playing real well," said Clark. "We are adamant about getting shutouts."
