UW-L is currently searching for a new Provost/Vice Chancellor. Bill Colclough is currently the interim Provost until a new Provost is appointed. The former Provost was Elizabeth Hitch who resigned last spring.
The UW-L Provost office represents leadership in the university that affects both it and the community. The position is involved in policy making that affect all aspects of UW-L's campus. This includes development for academic programs, efforts to promote on campus diversity, enrollment and teaching management, technology, library affairs and student business. The Provost works directly under Chancellor Joe Gow.
According to Bill Colclough, "the Provost serves as the chief academic affairs officer for the University. The position is appointed by the Chancellor in consultation with a search and screen committee."
The Provost office holds a lot of responsibility: the three Deans of College, the director of Murphy Library, the Dean of student services and even the head of security and parking facilities all report to the Provost.
After the new Provost is elected, he or she will serve for an undetermined amount of time. According to Jennifer Wilson, head of Human Resources at UW-L, "the position is 'limited', meaning that it serves at the pleasure of the Chancellor and has no end date."
Gwen Achenreiner, marketing professor at UW-L, is chair of the search committee for a new Provost. On the Provost web page, the person seeking the position is described as a "highly visible leader" with "the capacity to build strong teams and convey a transparent leadership style." The task of the committee is to "search and screen" according to Gwen, for remarkable candidates.
According to Achenreiner, the committee uses "selection criteria" to determine who is a qualified candidate. The selection criteria must be approved by the committee and Chancellor Gow.
After the criteria have been determined, the committee aims to select five qualified candidates for the Chancellor to critique. Ultimately, the Chancellor decides who will be the new Provost.
Achenreiner and the committee hope to have five qualified candidates selected by November 27. The interview process should begin soon after, and an announcement for a new Provost may be made as early as spring semester.
