Issue date: 4/9/08 Section: News
The UWL Student Occupational Therapy Association will host "A Model of Human Occupation Workshop". Jennifer Smith, Vice President of the UWL SOTA Club, explains that Occupational Therapy "provides people with the skills to do the things they want to do."
The Merriam-Webster online dictionary describes Occupational Therapy as "therapy based on engagement in meaningful activities such as self-care skills, education, work or social interaction," and states that it is "especially to enable or encourage participation in such activities despite impairment or limitations in physical or mental functioning."
Smith indicated the workshop is open to all students and will be particularly helpful to those interested in Occupational Therapy. The workshop will explain what Occupational Therapists (OTs) do and feature both Dr. Gary Kielhofner and Dr. Renee Taylor. They are able to present the workshop, financially, due to a grant.
Kielhofner is the author of the Model of a Human Occupation theory. He will be discussing this theory, also known as the MOHO theory, and its use today in the Occupational Therapy workplace. Taylor will speak about working with clients and the therapeutic use of self.
The workshop is scheduled for April 25th in Strzelczyk Great Hall in the Clearly Alumni Center. Registration is from 8:15-9:00 am, and the program will run until 5:00 pm. Those interested in reserving a spot should contact Erin Svoboda by April 11, either via telephone at (262) 880-0887 or by e-mail at svoboda.erin@students.uwlax.edu. The cost for both faculty members and students is $7 and will include a lunch catered by Chartwells.
