I confess I lost my ID card. Again. For the second time this year. Now, I know there is no one to blame for this but myself as I am a notoriously disorganized person and have a talent for losing things. And I do believe that there should be some sort of repercussion for my actions. However, I do feel that $20 is a bit much for a little piece of plastic that has no value to anyone except at Whitney and Cartwright centers.
They call this a "deterrent." Personally, I think the lack of food and the inability to get into my home for the several days that I was searching for my ID acts as a very good deterrent. And I understand paying something-five bucks. Or at least give me the first one free. I am already down 40 bucks this year. 40 bucks! I don't have this kind of money to just throw around; I'm a college student. And the university knows that I am strapped for cash. I only know one person here whose family was not seriously hurt (financially) by college. And I can't live without this piece of plastic. What is the worst that could happen by giving free or cheaper IDs? I doubt students would be "more careful". After all, it's kind of a hassle to go get a new one.
I'd just like to remind whoever is in charge of this processes that in order to purchase a new ID this year that it takes me three hours (before taxes). That is a lot of time and work-a lot more than it takes to get me a new card. Just because 20 bucks may be chump change to you doesn't mean it is to students like me. Please keep this in mind.
