Now that temperatures are getting warmer and the sun is shining most of us are excited to be outside. We do not have to bundle up before going out to search for entertainment on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Walking around campus and the surrounding streets is not as much of a chore anymore.
However, for anyone still dreading the trek from point A to point B, fear not, there is a solution you may not have considered.
After being introduced in the 2000-01 fall semester as part of the Blue Ribbon Task Force, the Safe Ride bus offers a safe ride between downtown and the UW-La Crosse campus runs Thursday through Saturday between the UW-La Crosse, Viterbo, WTC and downtown. Being formed by La Crosse Major John Medinger after the drowning of six men in the Mississippi River and the victims' high blood-alcohol levels, the Task Force took on the challenge to improve the infrastructure of the Riverside Park, to patrol the Riverside and to change the communities attitudes and readiness by expanding and publicizing the Safe Ride bus to the UW-L campus, according to cityoflacrosse.org.
Students who live on 3rd Street frequently use the bus on a regular basis. It is a convenient way to get downtown without having to worry about parking or a designated driver to safely take people home at the end of the night.
Younger students may be unfamiliar with the Safe Ride but should consider it an option when trying to get around the area. The bus is not just for those who are downtown or even just for those who are out drinking.
The bus runs Thursday nights 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. and Friday and Saturday nights 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. There are two stops around the Viterbo campus, and nineteen on, around, and between Western Technical College and UW-L.
Bus stops are easy to find because most are in popular, well lit areas and all are marked with a maroon and silver Safe Ride sign.
The bus circulates regularly through the route every 15 minutes. Students do not need to wait long to get where they want to go. Additionally student ID's are not required like on the regular bus, any and everyone is welcomed to ride each night, which even allows non-UW-L students, like your friends, to ride the bus.
The system is very convenient for riders. Individuals, whether or not they are drinking, should consider hopping on the bus. Drivers are friendly and as long as riders pull the cord to alert them to stop they are more than happy to get you to your destination.
