Humor Me
Musings from the desk of an undergrad

Issue date: 4/16/08 Section: Opinion
My creative juices being sucked dry this week due to several papers, exams, and repetitive frying of the brain, I decided to surf the web, so naturally I went straight to Google. It's a really generational thing, despite the fact we are aware it only actually gives you what you want about 50 percent of the time. I found many interesting things we will talk about, some things I can't talk about here, and some things I will never mention again.
Being technologically impaired (that's politically correct, right?), I can't help but awe at the Internet. I would definitely get hit by a semi truck on the information highway like a bad version of Frogger. Don't get me wrong, I understand how something like e-mail works or how you set up a website, but the idea of hacking is totally beyond me. My cousins, on the other hand, crashed their school's computer system with a math equation that equaled pi after the teacher bragged this new system was unhackable. It took less than five minutes. They also never got caught. I don't even know an equation that equals pi.
Anyway, search engines sort of still cause awe in me. Power at my fingertips… so much information and where does the average teenager go most frequently? E-mail, Google, Facebook, and YouTube. GREAT!! (Heavy sarcasm implied.)
What a waste of time, a humorous waste of time, but how much information are we gaining? It is sad but true, but the most useful information comes from online books. Not many professionals are publishing blogs about their research, not that you could use as a source, anyway. New graduate students are starting to put their theses out on the web, so it's give and take, but first we have to stop watching Numa Numa.
Oh, right, what I started my article about. I searched "April humor." Turns out April is National Humor Month. Well at least in America and Canada. So laugh a little. It makes you healthier, is a good stress relief, I am told. I am glad to do my part, hopefully. If not, go watch some Youtube… shhh, you didn't hear that from me.
