Schultz fans 13 as Eagles sweep Superior

The UW-La Crosse softball team earned a WIAC doubleheader sweep of UW-Superior Sunday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles won the opener, 5-3, and the nightcap, 8-4. UW-L improves to 18-11 overall and 4-4 in the WIAC while UW-Superior falls to 11-17 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
In the opener, Heather Schultz (6-3) struck out a career-high 13 for UW-L and held UW-Superior to four hits. The 13 strikeouts are tied for second in single-game school history. Lori Thompson struck out a school record 16 versus UW-River Falls April 19, 1994. Thompson also finished with 13 strikeouts against UW-Eau Claire (4-7-94) as did Sally Wenzel versus Calvin College, Mich. (4-13-01).
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Rachel Weyer tripled to open the inning and scored on Rachel Croak's sacrifice fly. The Yellowjackets tallied twice in the top of the third as Brooke Bailey had a sacrifice fly to score Krista Gray. Bailey then scored on Jodi Redlich's triple.
UW-L scored three unearned runs in the fourth as UW-Superior committed two errors. Croak had a sacrifice bunt knocking in a run and Liz Bradley an RBI double. Sarah Pfeifer made it 5-2 in the sixth on an RBI single. Alyson Lundberg hit a solo home run in the seventh for the final scoring of the game.
Schultz went 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, three runs and three walks with the 13 strikeouts. Weyer finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored while Jenna Ahnen was 2-for-3.
Nichole Tessier (9-10) pitched 6.0 innings for UW-Superior, allowing nine hits, five runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out five.
In the nightcap, UW-L scored five times in the bottom of the second, collecting eight hits. Weyer had a two-run triple. The Eagles added a run in the fourth on Ahnen's home run for a 6-0 lead.
UW-Superior scored four times in the top of the sixth. Lundberg had an RBI single for the Yellowjackets and Brittany Bloedorn a two-run double. UW-L added two runs to its lead in the bottom of the sixth. Pfeifer and Ahnen had back-to-back doubles to start the inning followed by Cara Salm's RBI single to score Ahnen.
Shelly Monahan (4-2) earned the victory for UW-L, going 4.0 innings, allowing no hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Jess Iwanski picked up her second save, pitching 1.1 inning with two strikeouts.
Ahnen was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI while Salm finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Kelsey Golackson was 2-for-2. Weyer had two RBI.
Lundberg (2-6) was the losing pitcher, going 5.0 innings, allowing 16 hits, eight runs and two walks with one strikeout.
