It took a while to finally get rolling, but the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team took down sixth-ranked UW-Whitewater in the second game of a doubleheader last Saturday at North Campus Field.
Junior Storm Gram and senior Mike Schmidt led off the bottom of the fifth inning with back to back doubles to spark the Eagles. The Eagles also scored on a single by junior Cory Poppitz, and then took advantages of Whitewater miscues to put four more runs on the board in the fifth. Schmidt scored on a passed ball, senior Dusty Otto reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch, and senior Tony Peterson walked and scored on an RBI groundout to put the Eagles up 7-4 after five innings.
Schmidt then doubled in what would prove to be the winning run in the seventh inning, scoring Gram, who had also doubled. Schmidt finished with three hits for the day.
After pitching eight strong innings, sophomore Greg Gibson turned it over to senior right hander Mike Brehm to close out the game. With a five run lead, Brehm appeared to get out of a jam by inducing Warhawk sophomore Jeff Donovan to hit into a double play. However, Brehm then gave up an RBI single, followed by an error and a 2 RBI double. After another single and a hit batsman to load the bases, Brehm walked Billy Johnson to put Whitewater within one, 9-8. However, the senior buckled down and got Mike Kenseth to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.
However, Saturday afternoon's game was the only highlight of the weekend for Eagles baseball. UW-L dropped Saturday's opener 14-7, and were swept by Whitewater 11-2 and 15-4 on Sunday.
Schmidt went six for nine in Saturday's two contests, scoring three runs with a pair of RBI's.
The Eagles return to play Friday with a doubleheader at UW-Superior.
