Two teams represent UW-L at ACIS Nationals

From April 25 to April 27, two teams represented the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at the 2008 Pontiac American Collegiate Intramural Sports (ACIS) Basketball Championships on the campus of North Carolina State in Raleigh, North Carolina. Both teams won their gender's respective regional tournament held at the REC, and represented UW-L at the national tournament.

Track teams sweep WIAC Outdoor Championships

The UW-La Crosse women's and men's track & field teams swept the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Championships Saturday afternoon at UW-Eau Claire. The Eagles' women's squad captured its second straight WIAC title with 192.0 points while UW-Eau Claire was second with 158.

2008 Beijing Olympic Preview

With the start of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics just over three months away, China is getting ready for one of the biggest sporting events in the world. China has been preparing for the Games ever since they received the bid in 2001. All of the construction has been completed, including Beijing National Stadium which holds 80,000 people.

Army right on in letting Campbell compete

One of the stories circulating around the recent NFL Draft is centered on pick 218. The seventh round pick of the Detroit Lions, Army safety Caleb Campbell, set a precedent for athletics at one of America's finest military institutions. If Campbell makes the Lions' roster for the 2008 season, he will be able to compete immediately under the new "Alternative Service Option", started by the Army in 2005.

Brewers lose Gallardo

Watching the play unfold in last Thursday's Brewers game, it had the looks of a gruesome injury. I have witnessed my fair share of ACL tears first hand, and that was my initial reaction when Yovani Gallardo took an awkward tumble across the first base line, trying to dodge a lunging Prince Fielder and a sliding Reed Johnson.

Back in 1994 (was it really that long ago?), 'Da Kid' was plucked straight out of high school. Now 'Da Kid' has become a future Hall of Famer and impact player, and is not that far away from the twilight of his career, which may come without him getting a championship ring.

WPBC competitors fare well

Two male members of the WPBC (weightlifting, powerlifting and bodybuilding club) competed in several contests over the past few weeks. Peter Fitschen, a senior biochemistry and pre-pharmacy major and Kyle Hampton, a junior pre-physical therapy major, competed in the 2008 OCB 45th Parallel on April 12 in Gaylord, Michigan.

1. Men's Track and Field The UW-L men's track and field team continued it's dominance, winning an unprecedented 18th straight outdoor WIAC Championship. That came on the heels of an indoor WIAC Championship and the school's 14th NCAA Division III Indoor Championship 2.

Baseball falls to Viterbo in Copeland Cup

The UW-La Crosse baseball team fell 14-4 to city-rival Viterbo University Tuesday night at Copeland Park in the Wells Fargo Copeland Cup. The Eagles fall to 15-18 on the season while the V-Hawks improve to 26-14. UW-L took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Darren O'Donnell's two-run single scoring Storm Gram and Matt Trocke.

Softball eliminated from WIAC Tournament

The UW-La Crosse softball team was eliminated from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament Saturday night with a 15-4 loss to UW-Platteville. The Eagles, the tournament's sixth-seed, fell 11-3 in six innings in their first game of the day against UW-Eau Claire.
