Fourth ranked Eau Claire too much for Eagles

It appeared that the UW-La Crosse women's soccer team couldn't recapture their magic from the last two matches in which they won by late goals as they fell to UW-Eau Claire 2-0 last Saturday. The Blugolds entered the contest ranked fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Top-25 Poll and left no doubt that they deserved that ranking when the final whistle blew.

After 26 years there will finally be postseason baseball in Milwaukee. The Brewers saved their best for last on Sunday in one of the greatest games ever to be played at Miller Park. Going into the final game of the season the Brewers needed a win and a New York Mets loss in order to clinch the wildcard spot.

Lance Armstrong to get back on bike

Lance Armstrong is back. That's right, Armstrong is returning to competitive cycling after a three year hiatus. Armstrong, who just turned 37 years old, will try to win his eighth Tour de France in 2009 while competing with team Astana. Astana is directed by Johan Bruyneel, who was the director of Armstrong's teams during his first seven Tour victories.

UW-L Men capture Roy Griak title

The UW-La Crosse men's cross country team captured the Roy Griak Invitational Saturday morning at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course. The Eagles finished with 52 team points. Emory University, Ga. was second with 141 points while Ohio Northern University was third with 147.

The UW-La Crosse women's cross country team placed third at the Roy Griak Invitational Saturday morning at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course. The Eagles finished with 160 team points. UW-Eau Claire took the team title with 110 points while Wartburg College, Iowa was second with 151.

Volleyball 3-1 at Platteville Invitational

The UW-La Crosse volleyball squad went 3-1 at the two-day UW-Platteville Invitational Friday-Saturday. The Eagles won both of their matches Friday, defeating the University of Dubuque (Iowa) 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 31-29) and Illinois Wesleyan University 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-18).

Bucks to play at La Crosse Center

The Milwaukee Bucks will play host to the Dallas Mavericks at the La Crosse Center on October 10. The pre-season game is set for 7:30 pm. The Bucks finished last season at a disappointing 26-56. Dallas finished the season at 51-31. It's a whole new season and the Bucks are hoping to write a success story this year.

With the regular season finishing up in the MLB, it is only appropriate to wildly speculate as to who will take home the individual awards. A tight voting race is expected for AL MVP, but the awards for the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year are pretty much wrapped up.

Last season's NL Cy Young winner, Brandon Webb has pitched consistently well this season. He leads the NL with 22 wins (thus far 28% of his team's wins) has a 3.24 ERA, and struck out 176 batters. He and Dan Haren carried the Diamondbacks on their backs, but it wasn't enough to make the playoffs or earn a second straight Cy Young.
