Mr. Laux triumphs at Mr. UW-L competition. Voted Mr. Laux by Laux Hall residents, Michael Quirk went on to win over the judges at the Mr. UW-L competition on Wednesday, April 21. During rehearsal before the show, Quirk was excited to represent Laux Hall. "Laux is such a great place to live, and I've met some pretty awesome friends," said Quirk.
The judges found that Quirk's formal and sports wear, rose ceremony, question and answer and talent portions surpassed the other candidates. Quirk feels honored and appreciative of those who helped out. He said, "Without them it wouldn't have been anything close to awesome."
Quirk's sports wear portion of the competition wouldn't have been complete without his friends from Laux. Audience member and supporter of Quirk, Beth LeCocq said, "I couldn't stop laughing. He came on stage hitting tennis balls then a mob of ninjas attacked him."
His escort and girlfriend Mikaela Mendez-Smith was thrilled to hear that the theme of the competition was Hollywood. Both avid fans of the movie Grease, they knew exactly what to do. With the help of Smith's roommates, Quirk found his 'Pink Ladies,' and he didn't have to look far to find his 'T-Birds' either-a few ninjas didn't mind switching roles.
Feeling calm during his question and answer portion, Quirk left the audience with a fascinating response. "If I were to describe myself in one word, I would have to go with scrumtralescent," he said. Quirk's partner for the talent portion, Ben Uphoff, said, "I for sure thought he would have said cartoon."
Quirk continued to amaze his supporters throughout his talent. "Ben and I decided to base our skit off of the show Flight of the Conchords. Specifically, the Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros one," said Quirk. Uphoff and Quirk captivated the crowd while they played guitar and rapped their rhymes.
After the show, Quirk's supporters and helpers rushed the stage to greet him with an overpowering group hug. "Celebrating was a must. Anyone that wanted to went to Bdubs. And, to cap the night off, we went to Walmart at midnight to buy AVATAR," said Quirk.
