Swim team makes clean sweep

 After last week’s 119 – 124 loss to rival, UW-Stevens Point, the UW-La Crosse men’s and women’s swimming and diving team proceed to 4-1 overall and 3-1in the WIAC with a victory over UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall. 

The Eagles swept the diving competition with Junior Rachel LaValley winning the women’s one-meter diving competition (242.60 points), while Junior Shannon Doyle captured the three-meter (251.10). Sophomore teammates Trey Edgerle took the men’s one-meter (234.00) and Casey Chamberlain with the three-meter (227.55).

Both UW-L Men’s and Women’s teams took both relay events on Saturday. The women’s 200-medley team of Jennifer Bryson, Brittany Erb, Danielle Ellingson, and Abby Diehl took first (1:40.43) along with the 200-freestyle relay of Hannah Mueller, Laura Reienberg, Lauren Kaiser and Eva Clemens (1:41.33). The men’s team followed suit capturing first with the 200-medley relay of Casey Borden, Matt Diehl, Joel Knuesel, and Spencer Loch (1:36.01) along with the 200-free relay team of David Sloane, Kyle Bennwitz, Brenden Gould, and Jordan Hanrahan (1:34.24). 

Katharine Mickschl, Colleen Tierney, Megan Herrick and Eva Clemens won their individual events. Mickschl the 200 free (2:04.56), Tierney took the 200 I.M. (2:21.70), Herrick stole the 100 butterfly (1:05.68) and Clemens touched out Lauren Kaiser in the 100 free (55.63). Justin Dembski, Simon Weisse and Kurt Zehel also placed first in their events. Dembski won the 200 free (146.01). Weisse captured the 200 I.M. (2:08.03). Zehel took the 100 butterfly (54.04).

The UW-L Eagles said goodbye to seniors Matt Diehl, Ben Knutson, Corey Mukai, Chelsea Hoff, Kelsie Hopfensperger, and Brianna Peyer during the final home meet of the season. Dominating the UW-Whitewater Warhawks the women’s team won 132-56 and the men’s team took in a 108-73 victory.

Next weekend beginning Thursday, February 11, UW-L will make its appearance at the WIAC Swimming and Diving Championships held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis beginning at 9 a.m.
