Ari Herstand, a local favorite, will return to La Crosse Saturday night. Herstand, who became popular in La Crosse after playing The Cellar, The Root Note and The Warehouse, said he loves playing here. "The Cellar show last year was such a great show and a great turn out," Herstand said. "La Crosse is definitely a stop for me every time I go on the road. The community has been so good to me." Herstand is known for his "live looping" abilities. He explained that this means he sets up his microphone, keyboard, guitar, harmonica and trumpet and records each section of the song separately in front of the audience. This allows the audience to actually see him create the arrangement for the song. "This is a fairly unique live experience for those who haven't seen looping done before," Herstand said. ""It's a lot of fun." For an example of Herstand's live looping techniques check out his YouTube video "Ari Herstand - 'Rose Stained Red' - live" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDQrl8BNBK0). Herstand has played at Summerfest and opened for big-name artists such as Ben Folds, Matt Nathanson, Sister Hazel and The Bodeans. "The best show I've had was opening for Ben Folds because he is one of my musical idols," Herstand said. "I look up to him and he is a large influence on my playing and song writing. The crowd was incredible and they were very receptive to me." Herstand said he has also been influenced by Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie and Minneapolis's live music scene. Last year Herstand recorded his album "Whispering Endearments." Herstand said he was excited to get his songs on an album because sometimes looping doesn't do them justice. This is good news for those attending his show this Saturday because he will be bringing his band. "I don't perform with a band that often so this is going to be a special concert because La Crosse has always treated me well." The show will be at The Warehouse and begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $8.
