Looking good Cowley Hall
Science building gets approved for demolition
Centennial and Eagle Hall have recently gained bragging rights for being the most modern and up to date buildings on UW-La Crosse's campus, but it will not be long before another building garners that same integrity. What lucky building is being chosen? Cowley Hall of Science.
Cowley was originally built in 1965, and is home to numerous classrooms, science labs, a greenhouse, a planetarium, and computer labs. It is the center of science at UWL's campus, and as students may realize, has endured some wear over the last fifty years.
There are large plans to transform this building into something UW-L students and faculty can efficiently utilize and love. According to Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance, Bob Hetzel "It [will be] a new building about the size of Centennial Hall with new instructional and research labs."
Administration, faculty and students all believe revamping Cowley will be a positive addition to our already marketable campus.
"I have a lot of classes in Centennial Hall, and I really like the building, so I think if a building like Cowley Hall could be as new and up to date as Centennial, it would be really nice, and students would enjoy the atmosphere more," said sophomore at UW-L, Lindsey Harreld.
UW-L has plans to start the design of this project within the year, and has expectations to begin construction renovations and additions sometime in the year 2014.
The cost of renovating Cowley Hall is no small bill. The current estimated cost is right around 81 million dollars. All money will be funded from the state of Wisconsin, just as it was to build Centennial Hall. Because of state funds, there will be no increases in student tuition or fees.
While we enjoy the ability to utilize our current new buildings, Centennial and Eagle Hall, we are hopeful that the future classes that step through UW-L will also have that same grateful feeling when the new doors of Cowley open for the first time.
