Valentine's Day- Let's face it guys, this is one holiday that has the ability to ruin our dating-ego as our girls are always expecting us to step-up our game, get off the couch and get creative. Previous personal Valentine's experience typically involves: flowers, chocolate, gourmet dinner, some cheesy personalized-poetry, and the all too typical chick-flick viewing. Originality is epic to the opposite sex and you won't find a more perfect year to become original as Valentine's arrives. Score more points with your valentine by making the entire weekend about her and start on Thursday night. I suggest, ditch the dinner and a movie routine, (you can do this year-round) and instead stroll through a lamp-lit Riverside Park, catch dinner maybe at my personal favorites Hackberry's or Piggy's, and then finish with a serenade that won't require you to sing, but only listen. Listen to the acoustic sound of Ari Herstand, who will be performing just up the street at the Warehouse Thursday night - starting at 6:30 - and for same cost of attending a movie ($8). Herstand, who was an obvious hit with all when he played at the Cellar last semester, will be showcasing his recently released album Whispering Endearments. At only twenty-three years old, Herstand has opened for major artists such as Ben Folds, Matt Nathanson, Phil Vassar, Joshua Radin and The BoDeans. Additionally, he was a crowd favorite at this past summer's Summerfest in Milwaukee where he was featured on Milwaukee's evening news. Guitar strings and heart strings will be plucked as he rummages through running scales and arpeggios. Anything but ordinary, the album features perfect instrumentation and lyrical choice that were meticulously constructed over a six-month time frame. Written entirely from the heart, Ari will focus on making the night intimate and sincere. Songs to listen from Whispering Endearments will surely be his first-released single, "Last Day", "Rose Stained Red", and "Center of a Kiss". The level of honesty and passion heard in "Last Day" will leave you speechless, and your brain fluttering with endearment for past times spent with your significant other. "Rose Stained Red" will again grasp the brain and heart with lyrics like, "A beautiful flower will whither and die / if the neighboring weeds choke the struggling cry / for food and life and peace and soul / a rose stained red deserves a little more". "Center of a Kiss" obviously needs no explanation to the subject matter, but explores the ways in which seemingly odd instrumentation such as the sax and guitar can be intertwined harmoniously with soft lyrics like, "A piece of a sentimental wish / sinks the calm, this hormonal driven bliss / and incandescent eyes stare at my grieving little smile / but we go and I know the treading in the water / I'll be drowning in the water / we say goodbye." Ari Herstand is sure to make this Valentine's Day weekend an exceptional experience to go down in the record books. Get down to the Warehouse this Thursday night; performance starts at 6.30pm and tickets are a cheap $8.
