Looking for something to do outside?
REC program offers students reduced equipment rates
Outdoor Connection is a program at the Recreational Eagle Center (REC) that provides many services that include equipment rental, equipment purchasing advice, trips and seminars, skills training, the Green Bike rental program, and a resource library complete with maps, guide books, instruction and periodicals. Anyone can utilize Outdoor Connection, including the public, and for a reasonable price.
Equipment that can be rented out include, but are not limited to: kayaks, canoes, bikes, roller blades, things to go camping or backpacking (tents, food preparation materials, etc.), small games like Frisbee and bocce ball, and winter gear such as ice skates, toboggans and snowshoes.
The prices to rent anything from Outdoor Connection are based on a daily rate. You pay a general fee for the first day and $1 to $6 depending on the item every day after the first day. However, the prices are still reasonable since the most expensive thing for a UW-La Crosse student is only $20. A full list of what is available to rent can be found at www.uwlax.edu/recsports/OC_EquipmentRental.html.
Freshman Jenny Rogers rented a helmet and headlight to go caving one day and said she thought it was completely worth it considering the price and how much fun she had. Rogers also admitted that she was not fully aware of all that Outdoor Connection had to offer to rent, but had learned about it through a professor.
Many have taken advantage of what Outdoor Connection has to offer, as there has been over 1,100 rentals for the month of March and the first couple weeks of April for this year. Since we have been experiencing some unseasonably-warm weather this year, roller blades have become a popular item to be rented out for the spring months. As the weather becomes more consistent over the summer, Outdoor Connection tends to rent out more kayaks and canoes as well.
To rent something from Outdoor Connection, stop at the REC with a valid driver's license. The staff will write down your information, what you're interested in renting, and the length of time you wish to rent it. Unless you have a group larger than five people, full payment is required to reserve equipment from Outdoor Connection. For those with a group of five or more, a 50 percent deposit is required to reserve equipment. Outdoor Connection also supports Non-Profit Groups by giving a 25 percent discount off the public rate, provided that they have a valid tax-exempt number and a minimum of five identical items that are being rented.
Outdoor Connection has whatever you could possibly need to fulfill your biggest year-round adventures, whether they be big or small, so stop into their friendly office conveniently located in the REC.
