Saying goodbye to Chartwells
It's easy to criticize from afar. Sometimes I'm the target of it working at The Racquet, and other times I'm to blame. It seems that we as humans find this second nature; it comes so easily to us. With the Chartwells' contract terminated at UW-La Crosse starting next semester many students are glad to see a change in food. Few students, however, asked about the Chartwells employees. Where will they go? What will they do? And how much are my days going to suck without at least a 5 minute chat with the sandwich ladies in the Galley?
I think it safe to say that Whitney doesn't have the best food, after freshman year, I can honestly say I haven't gone back. But I also think it's safe to say that I have been nothing but blown away by the kindness of each and every Chartwells employee. From students to hired staff I have seen nothing but impeccable service and thoughtfulness at every visit.
My heart goes out to these employees, who I care about due to the personal relationships I have made with many though my years as a Racquet reporter and my years as a customer and student. I'm not the only one. It's not the slightest exaggeration that UW-L loves these employees, in fact some of them even have fan pages on Facebook. Theresa, the woman who operates the sack lunch line, has almost 400 likes!
Sometimes professors can get on my nerves: constant pop quizzes, attendance, and exams fuel the fire. Sometimes higher administration can frustrate me: tuition increases, policy changes, and funding cuts. But never have the food service providers been nothing but caring. There is something to be said about asking someone how there day is going and truly caring in that response. The Chartwells employees do just this and don't get enough praise for their work.
To all the Chartwells employees, good luck, I'll miss you and thank you for making my day slightly more positive. And to all the students, faculty, and staff when you see a Chartwells worker around campus take a moment out of your day to thank the individuals who made sure you were taken care of for all these years.
