NCAA nonsense

There’s a double standard that exists in the NCAA rule book that’s drawn considerable fury from analysts, players, and coaches alike around America. Jarrod Uthoff, a basketball recruit for the Wisconsin Badgers, recently informed head coach Bo Ryan that he was unhappy with his choice in the Badgers, and wanted a release from his scholarship. Basketball takes on a new meaning

Basketball at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse takes on many forms. It’s a competitive sport for the school, an intramural activity for students who are not part of the collegiate team, and an event that  fundraises for families in need. On April 28 , in Mitchell Hall Gymnasium, there will be a 3-on-3-basketball tournament to help raise money for the family of Ben Fiers. Full story

Eighty-five years and they still got it

On Monday, April 9, the La Crosse Center played host to one of the most publicized basketball teams in the world. For four quarters, the Harlem Globetrotters showed o their unique style of basketball skills, combining gravity defying dunks, technical dribbling, and precision passing much to the delight of the audience who attended the two hour show. Football is the dominant sport in America. So dominant, in fact, that fans actually tune in for a draft show that features little action, but tons of excitement.  This year’s draft promises to be much of the same. And yes, we’ve all been informed on Andrew Luck and RG3 to an extent that would make most football junkies queasy. Full story

A playoff for the Bucks?

Since the departure of head coach George Karl, the Milwaukee Bucks’ struggles can be attributed to several factors. Mainly, they have an owner in Herb Kohl who micro-manages the franchise. Aside from drafting Andrew Bogut in 2006 (who has been injury prone his entire NBA career) and Brandon Jennings in 2009, Kohl’s personnel moves have been less than stellar. Full story

UW-Ls men’s track and field team ready to begin outdoor season

Building on last year’s WIAC conference title and 2nd place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship tournament, the men of UW-L’s outdoor track and field team are preparing for yet another season of high podium finishes.  As the team begins final preparations for their first outdoor meet at Wartburg College (Iowa) on April 7th, The Racquet spoke with veteran senior All-American and team leader Terrance Thigpen to gain some insight on where the team is at as they prepare for their first competition, and what to look forward to this coming season. Player profile: Jeremiah Burish

Jeremiah Burish, a senior and pole vaulter for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Men’s Track and Field Team, bleeds maroon and gray. He has been a four-year competitor on the team and has accomplished many feats that most do not get to see. As the Men’s Track and Field team heads into the outdoor season, Burish has nothing but positives to say about the season thus far. Full story

Legendary coach Pein retiring after 30 years

Named Women's Coach of the Year, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's swimming & diving coach, Rich Pein, is retiring after 30 years. Pein has had a very successful career at UW-L, which includes holding the women's swimming and diving team's third Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WIAC) conference championship title for the past five seasons, and many of the student athletes receiving various honors. Women’s coach of the year

Lily Hallock has been named the head coach of the UW-La Crosse Women's Volleyball team. Hallock follows in the footsteps of 18 year veteran coach, Sheila Perkins. Perkins has retired with the most wins in UW-L history with a total of 392. Hallock states, "I was drawn to UW-L by the winning reputation of the Athletic department, and I look forward to being a part of that. Full story

An outstanding athlete, The Racquet wanted to get to know her better. Here's the scoop: Are there any nicknames you've been given either from teammates or fellow competitors? Nickname: Boom Have you sustained any battle trophies (wounds) from this sport? I have had numerous "battle wounds!" According to 2010 UW-L graduate Dan Laurent success in academics and in athletics are based on the mindset that the individual puts into every task that presents itself.  Laurent's mindset must have been one of excellence because the Biochemistry/Cellular and Molecular biology major achieved greatness in both aspects. WIAC Honors awarded to three UW-L athletes

On Tuesday, Jan. 24 UW-La Crosse senior Andy Novak, senior Danielle Ellingson and senior Sarah Swanson were named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athlete of the Week. "It was pretty neat to win the award, said Novak. Novak won the WIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week with the leading shot put distance of 59-0 at the UW-Stout Open. Full story
