Big Band Cabaret recreates the sights and sounds of the swing era

 Get ready, get set, swing! The time is ripe to let your hair down and your worries out. The UW-L jazz program features an evening cool jazz and sweet moves. Big Band Cabaret, featuring the UW-L Tuxedo Dance Orchestra, offers an evening of historical appeal. Music Department Chair Greg Balfany directs the band into the music of Benny Goodman, Les Brown, Glenn Miller and more. The 23rd annual Big Band Cabaret takes place 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in Valhalla. Dancing is encouraged!

The LaCrosse Jazz Swingtet and the UW-L Black Coat Orchestra will also perform. The Black Coat Orchestra is directed by Karyn Quinn and will feature local jazz artists like Tom Brown, tumpet, Tim Henke, voice, and Chris Frye, piano. The evening will also feature Chancellor Jow Gow and Department of Music professor Mary Tollefson as guest artists.

Selections include: Frank Sinatra’s “Come Fly with Me,” Glenn Miller’s “Tuxedo Junction” and Xavier Cugat’s “Patricia.” Tollefson will perform a Glenn Miller Orchestra arrangment of Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” on the piano.

In addition to swing favorites, the bands will perform dance music like polkas, Latin music and waltzes. The evening will be a great opportunity to learn and show off any dance skills!

Seating is done in Cabaret-style with candle lit tables. There will also be beverage service available and a spacious dance floor.

Tickets cost $10 for UW-L students and can be purchaed at the door or by calling 785-8415 during regular business hours.
