In an effort to be health-conscious, millions of people worldwide are trading their sugar-saturated sodas for bottled water. But is bottled water really a friend or a foe? Many are already aware that reusing plastic bottles continuously can release dangerous toxins. However, buying new bottles every week is rarely an option the average American can afford, nor is it environmentally-conscious.
The simple fact of the matter is that bottled water may be no safer than well water. Not only is bottled water rarely from the natural and pure underground spring as advertised, but Capitol Hill only requires that bottled water meet the same regulations and be “as good as” the tap water where the bottles are packaged and sold. In addition, research has found that chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA) are in the make-up of many plastics. BPA is linked to the increased risk of infertility, obesity, and even cancer.
Thankfully, there are easy ways to stay clear of drinking these harmful toxins. Check the bottom of the bottle to locate the number. A seven (hard, clear plastic) contains BPA. Number 3 (PVC) and number 6 (Polystyrene) also leach chemicals. Also, never freeze or microwave plastics as it aids in the release of poisons. The best alternative to bottled water can be found right in your kitchen by using aluminum water bottles and refrigerator-friendly purifiers to both save money and ensure healthy drinking water. Best fact: Tap water uses .03% of the energy that is needed to manufacture a bottle of water without creating waste - According to Newscorp’s Global Energy Initiative.
