The Grammy nominations were Dec. 2, and the truth is that it is all about Beyonce and Taylor again. And yes, Kanye will be there, but we’ll just have to wait and see if he keeps his trap shut this time. Swift has an astonishing eight nominations, but Beyonce has the cake with ten nominations. However, the fact remains that in their respected genres and different levels of competition, Swift may have the upper hand. If Taylor sweeps all eight, (which is not out of the question), she will not only be the Michael Phelps of the night, but will tie with Michael Jackson and Santana for the most Grammys won in a single night. The two starlets face off in the three biggest awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. My guess is Taylor will take home all three. While it is true her album Fearless has already won top honors at the AMA, CMA, ACM Awards, and of course Best Female Video Award at the MTV Awards, you have to hand it to the twenty-year-old for writing or co-writing every song on her album. Whether you like her or not, it’s a feat not many musicians can brag about.
In her first attendance of the Grammys as a nominee, Colbie Caillat will vie for four gramophones. But will this be her year? Lady Gaga has five nominations, but critics are whispering that she may be snubbed to just a single win in her Best Dance Recording nomination. And while country music has had a great year of newfound talent, the newbies seem to have fallen short once more of beating out King George, Keith Urban or Trace Adkins, who again all find themselves battling it out for the male vocalist of the year in their genre. However, I am pulling for Billy Currington to ride out with the Grammy against all odds. Carrie Underwood only has a pair of nominations this year, but hopes to add them to her four past wins nevertheless. Kid newcomers, MGMT and Kid Cudi, could cause dramatic upsets in their respected categories. Additionally, Kings of Leon may just be the freshness that is needed to steal the thunder from Rock’s list of aging nominees.
The night will be star-studded with confirmed performances by Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews Band, Green Day, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga, Maxwell, Pink, Taylor Swift and the Zac Brown Band.
The 52nd Grammy Awards airs on CBS on Jan. 31 (Sunday) at 8/7c live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Be sure to check out my list of predictions, and I will update you on if I beat last year’s weak speculation of being 37percent accurate. But then again, it’s anyone’s gamble. Happy viewing.
