Neil Ferris: "How to get your girlfriend to watch sports" offensive

"Point out attractive athletes.  Girls are never going to complain about watching toned guys working up a sweat."

"Make sure to explain things to her."

"Most girls like learning from their boyfriends, especially if you get excited and let her know you're proud of her when she remembers things."

Am I alone in finding these select quotations from last week's issue of the Racquet offensive?  At risk of being called an overly sensitive bleeding heart progressive, I say they are sexist and not permissible.  These gender biased statements are unacceptable for a campus newspaper.  If it makes any difference, which it should not, I am in fact a man.

Is it even necessary to point out the numerous fallacies these quotations exhibit?  Look over them again and listen to the tone of the statements.  Now go past the mere patronizing tone and think for a moment about what in fact these statements are saying.  Do you seriously think, on a campus with a vast number of athletically-minded women, that these imbecile statements hold any shred of truth?

My only hope is that in 50 years our grandchildren will look back in the archives and shake their head at the sexism and carelessness that went under the radar of our generation.
