I found the article, "RE: We are more than just an opinions page" to be offensive on more than one level. It read more like an attack on just about everyone not aligned with the author's point of view rather than someone respectfully stating his or her opinion.
Having looked "beyond the borders of West Ave. and Losey Blvd.", I would have welcomed a diplomatic response from an emeritus publisher instead of the insulting one that was published.
I would expect a journalist esteemed enough to return to write for The Racquet to use factual evidence to support his point of view instead of using such sweepingly judgmental comments about a diverse group of people.
The author's tone of writing makes his argument weak. Regardless of one's political stance, it is unprofessional and irreverent to refer to people as "unwashed hippies" and "pants-wetting". There is no argument that can defend this abrasive language.
If the goal of this open forum is to allow people an opportunity to antagonize and refer to groups of people in a judgmental and disrespectful manner, then the author succeeded. However, if it is to invite people to think about a subject matter from a different point of view, the author's hostile approach to stating his opinion likely repelled readers more than swayed them into sharing his political vision.
