For those of you who haven’t heard of the Lord’s Resistance Army (or the LRA), it is a militant group that has a syncretic Christian religious ideology. To say their religious views are extreme is a vast understatement. They primarily operate in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic where they kill, mutilate, and rape citizens, and occasionally even engage in cannibalism. The brutal crimes they are encouraged to commit go in accordance with their deranged religious beliefs.
Under the leadership of Joseph Kony, the LRA has been in operation for 26 years, has sexually enslaved countless women, and abducted upwards of 66,000 children; brainwashing and forcing them to kill and mutilate their own families and communities. Joseph Kony claims himself to be a spokesperson of God, and thus continues with these atrocities under an apparent religious obligation. Through these acts and unthinkable deeds, Kony is seen as the world’s worst war criminal, and must be stopped.
The Invisible Children Campaign has been working to end this long running conflict in Africa for nine years. The goal of this year’s campaign is to capture Kony, consequently stopping and disarming the LRA. To achieve these things, they are putting forth every possible effort to make Kony extremely well-known as the world’s worst war criminal, insuring that the U.S. military will support the Ugandan army until Kony is captured and the LRA comes to an end.
Although their efforts are full force and highly admirable, they cannot achieve this alone; if Kony is not captured this year, their window for victory will be gone. The only way that this mission can succeed is if they can make Kony extremely notorious in order to raise support for his arrest. There is no doubt that if people become aware of who Kony is and the countless crimes he continues to commit, they will band together to stop him. When Kony is finally captured and prosecuted, he will become a concrete example of international justice and a warning to other war criminals that their crimes will not go unnoticed, nor unpunished.
It is imperative that we all do our part to spread the word about Kony. Every additional person that is made aware of him helps. I find it extremely sad and appalling that this sick operation has been in practice for 26 years and I have not heard about it until recently. I’m sure I am not the only one. So, lets unite and continue to promote the publicity on Joseph Kony to end these crude and entirely inhumane crimes in Africa. Every day that Joseph Kony continues in his tyranny innocent people will be abducted, sexually assaulted, and brutally murdered and violated. Help to begin the end.
