I am not writing in response to a specific article, but rather because I believe something should be brought to the attention of the UW-L community. A wonderful time of the year is coming up, and for many families, it is unfortunately a stressful time as well. After doing extensive research on poverty in the La Crosse area, I have come to realize that many families could use the help of fellow members of the community. An increase in the number of families in poverty within the last decade calls for more volunteers needed than ever before. Fortunately, there is a campus organization to help with this as well as a group in downtown La Crosse.
Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful organization that uses volunteers to fundraise and build homes for families in extreme financial need. As previously mentioned, a great time of the year is coming up because of the Holidays. Families suffering financially because they are below the poverty line should not have to be stressed during this time of family and togetherness. The good news is that these groups have fundraising events each year.
I simply want the efforts of this organization to be known to the UW-L community because many volunteers are needed to make dreams come true for even one family. The differences made can help better the lives of these people. The group on campus meets often, and anyone can make a huge difference.
