Recently at the state level there has been much heated debate. The Viewpoint section in The Racquet has printed opinion pieces presenting both sides of the issues facing Wisconsin's budget and the collective bargaining laws.
Unfortunately this has spurred lots of animosity towards our fine publication. Students and professors alike seem to have taken offense to some viewpoints presented and have even referred to The Racquet as "a sect of the College Republicans." These accusations are simply not fair and are rather insulting to all the students and their advisors that work hard to put out a quality paper each week.
The Racquet's news, features and sports sections do an excellent job presenting the happenings on campus and around the greater La Crosse community. It is even more impressive when considering that UW- La Crosse does not even have a journalism program.
Our Viewpoint section presents viewpoints. Imagine that! This section is meant to be an outlet for students to share their opinions on whatever they wish. We encourage students and faculty to write letters each week. The numbers of letters received usually increases when a differing angle of an issue is presented. This dialogue is what makes a democratic society great. Maybe closed mindedness is not the best strategy after all.
This has always been difficult to grasp because college students and professors will claim to be free-thinking and open-minded. Condemning The Racquet in its entirety for opinions on the opinion page does not seem to fit this ideology. Please help further the debate and share your own views with us instead of spreading rumors and using verbal smears.
This paper has come a long way in recent history and everyone involved takes a great deal of pride in the final product each week.
Support us by taking part in the dialogue on our Viewpoint page, checking out our excellent news, features and sports coverage, or by encouraging a friend to pick up the issue each week. We appreciate your readership and are commited to keeping it.
